Molly is eating seafood and drinking bougie coffee in Seattle, so you’re stuck with me. I’ll try to be funny. Lately it seems conservatives have taken their extreme agenda too far and people are pushing back. That trend continued this week.

An Oklahoma judge permanently blocked a law, which banned any off-label use of medications for abortion. Judge Donald Worthington’s ruling recognized bodily integrity and reproductive choice as fundamental rights under the Oklahoma state constitution for the first time. He also ruled that the restrictions are “so completely at odds with the standard that governs the practice of medicine that [the bill] can serve no purpose other than to prevent women from obtaining abortions and to punish and discriminate against those women who do.” Hopefully legislators get the message that their disingenuous attempts to restrict access to abortion under the guise of protecting women’s health won’t be tolerated.

Later this week Governor Fallin signed a bill requiring all Temporary Assistance for Needy Families applicants to undergo a drug screening. Originally the bill required applicants to take and pay for a chemical drug test. Now every applicant will go through a drug screening and will only be drug tested when there is “reasonable suspicion” of drug abuse. “Reasonable suspicion” is also the standard that police officers must meet to stop and question people on the streets. That policy plays out in a totally non discriminatory manner. I’m sure it’ll be the same with this law.

Lest ye worry that our state legislature might be up to something useful, the Senate passed a resolution reaffirming their support for defining marriage between one man and one woman. Apparantly Oklahoma’s stance on same-sex marriage wasn’t clear. We’d only overwhelmingly passed a state constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage. Though I wish the mainstream gay rights movement would stop acting like marriage equality will solve all our problems, if a same-sex couple wants to get married, what is the big deal?

just 2 dudes and their dog celebrating holy matrimony

In other news, Fallin nominated the super-qualified Jim Roth to serve on the Oklahoma Election Board, but the Senate Rules Committee is not hearing his nomination. Some, including ultra-conservative newspaper The Oklahoman, speculated that the the committee isn’t hearing his nomination because Roth is openly gay. Politicians letting prejudice get in the way of what’s good for our state? Shocking.

Speaking of employment discrimination, our very own U.S. Senator James Lankford said he was totally cool with it. Think Progress reports that Lankford believes that LGBTQ workers should not be added to existing anti-discrimination employment laws because being gay is a “choice” and not an immutable characteristic like race or gender. Quoth Lankford, “You don’t walk up to someone on the street and look at them and say, ‘gay or straight?” Actually that happens in one way or another more often than you’d think, but thanks for giving your opinion on things you know nothing about, Lankford. As awful as attitudes like Lankford’s are, maybe the movement should focus less on inclusion into employment discrimination and hate crime laws since that strategy has not worked so well for women and people of color. It’s fine; I’m gonna go talk to Dean Spade about it.

People have been taking cheap shots at Lankford’s bowl cut, which I’m not going to discourage:

Check this: Lankford loves personhood so much he sponsored a personhood bill in Congress. Kevin Calvey loves personhood so much that he attempted to strong-arm our legislators into passing a bill. Same haircut. Same cause. A coincidence?

Alls I know is that I once had what could’ve been described as a bowl cut and nobody made fun of me (probably because hate didn’t spew out of my mouth every time I opened it).

I was going to post a Raven Symone video in honor of Molly and because Raven might’ve been outed this week (no matter what Glee tells you, it’s never ok to out someone). However, none of Raven’s music screamed “That’s so Raven” – i.e. it wasn’t that good. So here’s one for Calvey, Lankford, and their love affair with fertilized eggs.

Mallory’s sorry she wasn’t funny. Molly will be back along with the lols next week.

Hi, hello, what’s up? I want to take this special time of the month when I get to blog at OK4RJ to talk about how we talk about periods (haaa, time of the month. Pun intended. I hate myself.). You know all of that stuff from second wavers, your mom, Your Aunt Diane, etc. about how your period makes you a WOMAN and now you are EMPOWERED and we are here because of THE BLOOD OF OUR MOTHERS and this is your MOON TIME? I want to problematize the shit out of that conversation.

Happy Menarche!

This idea that you have to love your period to be a “real” feminist or a “true” woman is total bullshit and really harmful. It’s also cissexist and ableist as hell to assume that ALL women menstruate. Placing so much emphasis on menstruation and biology as the basis for womanhood excludes transwomen. It furthers the trope that trans* people can never really be the gender that they identify with unless they have the “authentic” body parts or biological processes. Transwomen are women, whether they menstruate or not. While I personally can’t speak for trans* people, I would imagine all of this emphasis on menstruation is probably pretty fucked up for transmen as well. Telling everyone who gets a period that you have to love your body, your period, and your womanhood really isn’t helpful if you get a period but don’t identify as a woman. Any push for authenticity quickly turns into identity policing.

Not all ciswomen menstruate, either. People with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), people who have gone through menopause, had hysterectomies, or have various other health issues may very well never menstruate. Are they any less of a woman? Do they not still have a stake in access to reproductive health care? People with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) can have excruciating pain, depression, irritability, and even thoughts of suicide related to their period. Expecting us to just love every single cycle is bullshit. I don’t feel closer to Mother Gaia when I’m bleeding so heavily I can’t sleep without a pad and a tampon and still bleed through my sheets. Even if someone who menstruates has able-bodied privilege, they still might not exactly enjoy their period. And that is okay. It’s not always a fun process.

It’s possible to not be totally enamored with your period while simultaneously recognizing that menstruating doesn’t make you inferior, dirty, or impure. If you feel empowered by your period, great. Good for you. I’m sincerely glad that you aren’t ashamed of your body or in pain. But don’t tell me I’m a bad feminist because I hate my period, don’t police the identities of trans* people, and just check your privilege in general. Reproductive justice is about so much more than whether or not people want to have abortions. Reproductive justice needs to include trans* people and people with disabilities, including reproductive disorders. It is about so much more than able-bodied, cisgender women.

Carly got her first period in a mall dressing room in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Her cousin Rachel had to explain how to use tampons so she could still go to Matthew’s Bar Mitzvah pool party without the whole mishpucha publicly congratulating her on becoming a woman. Rachel just graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and Carly is super proud, and still grateful.

You can repeat the following phrase to yourself as much as you need to, because it’s really, really important: STD’s are a biological, not a moral, reality.

Think of it this way. Your body is made of so many different kinds of cells and configured in a variety of ways, and some areas are more prone to illness than others. Stomach flu, common cold, strep throat, urinary tract infection, cold sores, asthma, diabetes, etc. We are covered in bacteria and exposed to so many things on a regular basis. It’s a part of the human condition (and life on earth). Some of it has to do with our genetics, some with our environment, the care we have access to, the food we eat and the air we breathe; there are so many different factors that influence our health. Personal responsibility and actions are almost always a small part of this much larger interacting system.

Now because of the ways we view sex and the parts of our bodies we use for sex, we seem to think the illnesses associated with them have some kind of moral weight in a way that other illness do not. Do we shame people for being in public, touching a utensil, forgetting to wash their hands, or happening to stand near someone who just developed a cough? Of course not! But when it comes to talking about STDs that we get by touching certain parts in certain ways, it seems like personal responsibility and actions become the only important factors to discuss, and usually as a way to subtly (or not so subtly) make judgments about someone’s moral character.

But really: many kinds of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa have made it the job of their entire species to find every which way they can live off your body and spread to others around you. It is their life’s work. If we’re taking reasonable responsibility for ourselves, we know we cannot prevent every single cold, every outbreak of chicken pox, every splinter that gets infected. It is the reality of a body living on Earth! There’s just no way around getting sick and needing care for some reason at some point.

After taking a more responsible look at the role biology plays into the realities of STDs, it seems ridiculous to treat them differently than other infections and illnesses we get exposed to just for living. Sure, we can wash our hands and stay home if we have the flu, we can take medicine and keep our streets, water, and air clean. We can also wear condoms or use other barrier methods, inform partners of our past exposures and test results, and educate ourselves and others about symptoms, risks, and treatments. But that is something we can all collectively do to help improve our health; shaming improves the lives of absolutely no one.

All people have a right to the kind of consensual sex life they want for themselves. Getting tested and knowing your status is just another way of doing a personal inventory: you have to know what’s going on with you in terms of your health, your mind, your expectations, your boundaries, and your desires, in order to work towards a healthy sex life that works for you. People who live with STDs, now or have in the past, have the right to a consensual sex life; informing your partners and using appropriate protection methods is always good practice, and part of a good sex life for everyone, no matter their status.

Now print this paragraph off and tape it to your bathroom mirror:

Having an STD/experiencing one in the past only means you are a human that contracted an infection that is likely curable and most certainly treatable. It does NOT mean you are undesirable, or that no one will ever want to have sex with you again. Sure, some infections are painful, annoying, and can threaten your health, but so are infections that plague all other parts of the human body. The important thing is that your health is prioritized. What illnesses you might have now or what you’ve been exposed to in the past has absolutely nothing to do with how good or worthy or moral of a person you may be. It’s simply not relevant because, again, STDs are a biological, not a moral, reality.

Jen is so ready for pool-hopping this summer. Look forward to video blogs from her, if she can figure out how to edit the damn things! Follow her on tumblr if you want to read more of her work/watch her respond to the most bizarre asks of all time.

Schools out! Oh thank the Lorde! Sorry there wasn’t a post last week given the large amount of news. But I had been waiting 8 years to graduate so I couldn’t pull myself away from writing about such important topics like weaving and pottery. I’m serious. And don’t judge about the 8 years, we all have our journeys and no I’m not graduating with a PhD. It happens.

Remember when I wrote that there was a bill in California that would allow Nurses and other medical professionals to perform abortions? Welp, that got squashed.

Governor Brownback and most politicians of Kansas went and showed what a twatwaffles they are once again by passing Senate Bill 313. It’s 69 pages long and does such awesome things as not allowing individuals that make donations to reproductive justice non-profits to use them as a tax write off-which would basically cut their funding. It mandates that women be told that abortion causes breast cancer. It also threatens the accreditation of the University of Kansas because they have a medical school and see, medical students should probably know something about abortion. Brownback doesn’t care, he said if it came through, he’d pass it WITHOUT READING THE BILL. That girl was right, Brownback-you do blow a lot.

So what did y’all think about Vice President Joe Biden and President Obama saying they ‘support gay marriage‘? I feel it’s something that needed to be said but by no means is this statement or kind of thinking inclusive. This is fantastic explanation of why there’s still a ton of progress to be made. And NO, I AM NEVER SATISFIED. I know we are all waiting on the edge of our seats for some political heavy hitters to give their opinions on teh gayz marrying so Bristol Palin said it was all because President Obama watches too much Glee. Well Jenny ‘JWoww’ Farley ain’t havin it. I really need to finish up the last season of Jersey Shore. Thanks for the reminder JWoww.

Does it come as any surprise that entitled, perpetual teary eyed Mittens RomCom was a total asshole at prep school? He’s a smegmatoothed shithead now, that’s not something you really grow into. So it comes out that Romney taunted and bullied a gay kid at his prep school and attacked him. That shits fucked up, we all do terrible things (speaking for myself here) when we‘re young but we learn from them. Not flat out deny remembering doing anything bad and give a half assed apology. PUHHLLEEAASE.

Here’s a quick rundown of the remaining stories:

No, nobody wants to talk about the TIME cover. Catholic Bishops don’t have anything to do so they are investigating if those Girl Scouts are aborting cookies or something along those lines. North Carolina is really trying to one-up all the other states that have outlawed gay marriage by arresting two women seeking a marriage license just days after they official declared it illegal (PS-those marry your cousin and redneck jokes aren’t funny or original). It’s mothers day and I just can’t think of nicer thing to do than take my mom to Hooters for some free wings-that means she doesn’t have to cook on her ‘day off’! We can all chill now, Park ‘N Rec has been renewed along with that other waste of time. Ron is pleased.Alright friends. That’s the week. I’m gonna go put on my tiny hat and celebrate my graduation happy times! I picked this video for you because it’s new and Nikki looks kinda constipated in some parts. ENJOY!

It’s rare that you find an open and honest memoir. Having worked in the publishing industry, I know that the majority of memoirs are used solely as an opportunity to toot one’s horn with every uncomplimentary detail completely left out. But when you do find a memoir that details every nitty gritty bit of a person’s life and entertains simultaneously, well, you really have to share it.

Let’s Pretend this Never Happened is a masterfully written book by Jenny Lawson, also known as The Bloggess. Her book covers many of the topics her blog covers, though I feel for the first time you really get to know Jenny Lawson. She’s a woman who is known for buying giant metal chickens that she regularly uses to taunt her husband, taxidermied animals that she dresses up in their own costumes, and building her own dollhouse with Harry Potter themed rooms. But she’s known for something else as well.

Lawson regularly chronicles her battles with depression and social anxieties on her blog, and in her book, the reader gets a first-hand account of what these experiences are really like. It’s refreshing to read her candid words and know how she has spent her life dealing with these illnesses. Honestly, it seems that the only places we see depictions of these illnesses in the mainstream media is in medication commercials, and even though, I can only surmise that individuals experiencing them are often found on the couch while wearing a hoodie while the dog looks on wishing someone would just throw the tennis ball for him. (This is not unlike those terrible commercials that show a woman with that “not so fresh” feeling and how she wears a hoodie because she doesn’t feel like herself.)

But Lawson brings the raw honesty and tempers it with her own particular brand of humor that is at once twisted and obscure, yet rhetorically sound in that chop logic sort of way. For instance, when she relates a tale of her social anxiety disorder, she talks about how instead of admitting to being a bleeding heart liberal at a dinner party thrown by her husband’s boss, she casually says that a serial killer once stabbed her in the face. (Spoiler Alert: This was actually a dream she had while her cat clawed her face in her sleep.) And from there the laughs continue as she continues to tell the story while her husband tries to get her to be quiet, though she can’t stop because she feels if she can just say one more thing she can make it better. The story ends with she and her husband leaving the party early, and her husband agreeing that maybe letting her take a lot of medication to dull her anxieties isn’t the best idea.

She details her miscarriages, the birth of her daughter and just how many people got to look at her vagina that day. She talks about learning how to sit on couches in a rich person’s home. (Apparently, rich people don’t lean back on the cushions.) She details being the outsider in a small town and what it’s like to be the only goth girl in the cattle insemination class in high school. She talks about being poor and so desperately wanting to fit in but it’s almost impossible when your father’s wild turkeys follow you to school everyday.

And most of all, Jenny Lawson just tells the truth. It’s a breath of fresh air from a memoir in that she doesn’t mind giving you all the information that could potentially make you turn away from her. It’s well worth the read just for the real portrayal of mental illness and how she deals with hers on a daily basis. You can find her book at most bookstores and her blog is here.

Marisa wants to be an awesome blogger someday like The Bloggess, and maybe she’ll make that happen someday if she can ever get the motivation to get off Twitter and get stuff done.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to participate in the New Mexico Public Health Association’s 2012 conference on health disparities. Partnered with the New Mexico CARES Health Disparities Center, NMPHA brought us “Integration, Innovation & Inspiration – Creating a Healthy New Mexico.” The conference was a confluence of leaders from all over the state, and was a really nice way to wrap up the Department of Health and Human Services’ Minority Health Month.

This year’s conference covered a massive swath of health-related topics: A seriously badass opening keynote by Chandra Ford wherein she brilliantly proposed using critical race theory as a framework from which to approach public health; midwifery and birthing options for women living in New Mexico; using storytelling as an educational tool in Native communities; combating opiate addiction in incarcerated populations; harnessing strategies for peer education for community health and wellness; and pretty much everything else you could want in a conference about all of the struggles we face as public health practitioners, educators, researchers, and community members. I learned a lot, I saw friends and colleagues, I met some great people, and I did some quality networking.

But of course, I’m a chronic complainer. I can’t just sit back and be happy about where we are as a movement. Nope. I have to find SOMETHING to critique or else I don’t feel like I’m doing my job. So, here’s my major rub with this year’s NMPHA conference on health disparities:

Where were all of the queer voices?

You’re shocked that I’m calling this out, I know.

Seriously, though. In this entire program of over sixty amazing presentations, only TWO explicitly addressed LGBTQI health disparities. Um, what? I don’t know if you know this, but New Mexico is actually one of the queerest states in the nation. With numbers like this, wouldn’t you think that tackling queer health disparities would be a high priority? Why not reflect the population in this conference?

Y’all, I know that I keep harping on this topic in all of my blogs here at OK4RJ, but I am steadfastly annoyed (and increasingly angry!) at the lack of attention being paid to queer health. How many people need to get sick, how many people need to die, before we actually do something? I mean, if we can barely get into the conversation, how are we going to enact real and lasting change?

I wish I had an answer.

Ricky is currently working on their PhD in Health and Environmental Communication at the University of New Mexico, and would like you to know that Albuquerque is like the Riverside of New Mexico. Follow them on twitter: @prettyrickyroo

What a week! I got a tooth filled and then accidentally overdosed on OTC cough syrup. I’m okay now, thanks for asking. Yes, I’m a grown up. No, I don’t wanna talk about it anymore.

So if the personhood bill were, umm, a person..it would’ve died last week and then came back to life this week. Like a zombie! or Jesus! Or Harry Potter! I guess it was hungry for the tears of legislators like Rep. Steve Vaughns of Ponca City. Mmm. Salty. Dude gave my favorite Wonka Waterfall a run for the money in the WAAAAH! category. Basically the ‘Personhood USA’ people were not gonna take it when Rep. Steel said last week that the house will not be voting on SB1433. So they got together and sent out a threatening letter. HOW SWEET. Awesome people and dumb people were at the Capitol all week and it was finally heard today, when we were told it was not being heard. Rep. Mike Reynolds got in a tizzy about that, screaming, yelling, throwing papers and had to escorted off the House floor. Which just proves my theory they are all big babies and might be into diaper play. Maybe. Probably. Cheer up, buttercup! There’s always next year!

Tomorrow is the National March against the War on Women. That’s a mouthful! It’s pretty cool because it started as a grassroots effort through social media and now marches are taking place all over the country. I invite everyone to join in at the OKC capitol. You might meet some cool people (me), get a sunburn, see some funny signs and besides it’s always fun to cause a ruckus!

So I know we rag on the coasts sometimes but it’s not because we don’t love them. We do. We love the things that NYC offers (some of us) or watching people’s nipples bleed as they run the Boston marathon. I personally look forward to visiting Ben and Jerrys at this cool area called Haight-Ashbury when I visit San Francisco. Or a attending a tandem bike belly dancing class in Portland. (I made that up!) I’m being a total hater and I’m joking. There are good things and people everywhere, even if some think living here should scare our vaginas? What I am finally getting at is some good news: A bill in California would allow Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants, and Midwives to perform abortions. Despite what we’ve been told, abortions are not a complicated procedure. This is awesome. Lawmakers that think logically about abortions? MIND BLOWN!

I know you’re gonna have a hot-to-trot weekend. It’s freakin lovely outside, go fly a damn kite and yodel or some shit! Oh yeah, put on your fuck me pumps!

Molly’s about to graduate. It took long enough, damn. If she was gonna walk, she’d do this across the stage (and all over that assface Dean Bell) NOW GIMME THAT DAMN DIPLOMA!!!!!

I want to start a discussion about the importance of uncertainty. I found out today that I was not selected for the latest salaried position I applied to. At first I got pissed off and even cried a bit (I do have nearly $43,000 in student loans…) then, after freaking out about my financial uncertainties, came the relief of that same uncertainty. There’s no reason to freak out. Life gets scary sometimes, and our country happens to be in a frightfully unstable point right now. I took some time out to remind myself of all the other times I triumphed when dealing with uncertainty.

If you didn’t already know, I’m the third of four children born to an Ivy-league educated computer programmer and a multi-talented printer. My first bout with uncertainty was concerning location. The first part of my life took place in middle class Miami, Florida. When I was born there was a functional family hierarchy that existed on both sides of my extended family. I attended church and magnet schools with teachers and students from all kinds of lifestyles and ethnic groups.

My family left that community to live in Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was nine years old. I immediately noticed that: most people in the suburbs where I grew up were considered “white” and I was almost always the only black person in a room. Listening to Latino music seemed to be a faux-pas, and year round sunshine and an ocean breeze were replaced by snow and tornado season. However, I adjusted to my life circumstances; I didn’t know of any other options. The next part of my life touched by uncertainty was the realm of education

I did really well in public school and at the end of fifth grade was recommended to attend the private school that my older siblings attended. I tested in and began six years of processing the intense racial micro-aggressions and all the other aggressions that come with the onset of hormones during adolescence. I survived my first bout with depression during my teenage years and then went to college where I took out tons of loans because my parents sent all four of their kids to a private school where I earned horrible grades. Oh, and my parents divorced the year I graduated which ended the mainstream suburban life in which I was reared. My Mom sold the house we grew up in and moved to a rental property. The third and most spectacular facet of my uncertainty prism concerns my socioeconomic status.

In college I paid my tuition first, my rent next, books and school supplies, then food. I was hungry for most of my six years in college and really stressed out. Many months came and went when I did not know how I would pay for all of my expenses, but something always worked. My bike was my main mode of transportation. I rode it to school, work, and everywhere else. When it was hot I sweated and baked in the sun, when it rained I was soggy-bottomed and despondent, and in the winter I had to walk when it got snowy or icy. Then came a spring when I grew into a woman and out my natural curls. I experienced what social scientist Derald Wing Sue categorized as the three types of “racial transgressions”; micro assaults, micro insults, and micro invalidation.

What marketing team decided on this name for toys? A mystery for the ages.

While dating, white men often told me how they heard sex with black women is amazingly good or how they’d never tried it before. People touched my hair and scalp regularly without my permission, and I often received compliments that referenced media influenced stereotypes insinuating black women are angry, stupid, loud, hideous, and obese. I tell you with no malice that these transgressions happen more than I’d like to admit. Or the fact that there’s always a show about iconic women on television, but most of them have low levels of melanin?

What I’m trying to say with all of this anecdotal evidence is that, for most of my life there’s been some sort of insurmountable factor that I’ve just had to accept. My life, like the trunk of a tree grew according to its surroundings. Each time I deal with the particular uncertainties of my life, my ego dies. I have faced the abyss and pondered its uncomfortable absurdity on numerous occasions. I’m poor, and a descendant of a group of people previously considered sub-human in a multi-national cultural hierarchy. I’m here today not to evoke your pity, but rather to share the secret to evolution and progress. The suffering I have experienced in my short life empowers me with a heightened psychological resilience and a strong empathetic sense.

Life is painful for so many different kinds of reasons, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it but hold on. I’m sure many of you can relate to the problems I’ve described. That’s what’s important. The sooner we realize we’re on the same team the sooner we can start solving our shared problems. In the words of the eternally sagacious Albert Einstein, “once we accept our limits, we go beyond them.” I challenge everyone who may read this to reflect on your life. Consider what you’ve experienced and then zoom out and try to understand that life is hard for every living thing. When we feel pain, it is life giving us an opportunity to learn something.

I’ve been thinking about patterns lately. Not the aesthetically-pleasing type, either. No, I’ve been thinking about large-scale patterns of abuse, destruction, and decline. Hate to break it to you, but the global economy is in the terlet and our fossil-fuel based industrial capitalism is straight-up collapsing in on itself, and that is not fear-mongering. Hate to break another thing to you, but our government has been bought and paid for by corporations, and that is not a conspiracy theory. Hate to preach to the choir, but elected officials have been rolling back reproductive rights for a minute now. Whew! Aren’t you glad we got that out of the way?

"you broke so many things to me that I am now exhausted" - this stock photo

I just did literally ten minutes of research which culminated in this Alternet article that basically explains something we sort of already knew (anti-choice legislation isn’t a result of miraculous right-wing groupthink). During that ten minutes I found out that the blueprint for all the fetal personhood legislation that’s been going around like a bad cold came from the Liberty Center for Law and Policy, an offshoot of Falwell Empire-owned Liberty University. As mentioned in Alternet’s article, Americans United for Life (AUL) has also produced a bunch of blueprints, and American Legal Exchange Council (ALEC) is responsible for their fair share of rollbacks on domestic violence protections and anti-choice legislation. Most progressives at this point are aware that Citizens United has caused the mass takeover of legislative processes by corporate interests who fund groups like ALEC and AUL.

So none of this is surprising, but seen all at once it’s rather impressive, and telling. Why all of this, all at once? And why do capitalist corporate interests have such a boner for fetal heartbeat legislation? Here’s the large-scale historical pattern I alluded to: as societies degrade and economies collapse, groups that have tenuously held on to what little power they’ve attained in society are the first to be divested of that power so that those at the top can roll themselves along just that much longer.

"a boot stamping on a human face forever" - this melanistic cerval

These cutbacks and attacks on reproductive health might seem like they’re coming from every direction all at once and for no particular reason, but they do serve a particular purpose for the ruling class. Besides the fact that donations to groups like Liberty Counsel are tax-deductible, why else would so much corporate cash be invested in seemingly fringe legislation that must be run through state legislatures over and over before anything comes of it? If large segments (say, half) of the population can be steamrolled in a time of economic disparity, they will be.

I don’t want to get all War-on-Women up in here for like ten reasons, only one of which I’m willing to discuss right now: it’s not just a war on “women,” it’s a sustained campaign of disempowerment and subjugation against all oppressed people for the benefit of a tiny, tiny minority at the top of an economic system that has always been predicated on domination and exploitation. “Oklahoma” isn’t waging this campaign or even writing this legislation – we just happen to be the front line.

Pearl runs a bunch of seriousface tumblrs including one about collapse what do you know.
